Treyarch hints next Call of Duty title could be set in... World War 2

If Treyarch has its way, the World War 2 FPS genre could soon be renamed the 'Never Ending War.'

Treyarch hints next Call of Duty title could be set in... World War 2

Guys, we need a break, seriously! (Click for more on Call of Duty: World at War)

Is the World War 2 genre ready for retirement? Probably not, if comments from Treyarch Studios are any indication.

Treyarch, as you may know, is the developer behind Call of Duty: World at War, the fifth installment in the series. It also marks a return to the WW2 setting after the critically acclaimed modern day warfare presented in Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4.

But, in an interview with CVG, Helle was unable to deny that the next CoD would leave the WW2 genre behind. "I can't say that there won't ever be a WWII Call of Duty game again," he said.

So what kinds of WW2 FPS ideas are left?

"If we had time we might have shown the end of the war from many different country's perspectives, and maybe that's a story still untold," Helle said.

"In the meantime people definitely haven't seen the final charge of the Red Army, people haven't seen what the fighting was like in Okinawa and I think it's definitely important to show those stories from a polished perspective rather than show some of the mopping up elsewhere in the world," he said.

Hey commenters, anyone else kind of tired of World War 2 FPS titles? We know Gears of War super star Cliff Bleszinski is.

As long as they keep putting out quality games I don't care what time period it is in.

Last time i checked, Infinity Ward is the developer responsible for Call of Duty 4.

Treyarch is doing Call of Duty 5, and is responsible for all of the odd numbered Call of Duty games.

That would leave 6 for Infinity Ward again.

Gamepros titles have been OFF lately. Like this one, and the one for Rock bad 2 Wii version to RIVAL ps3 and 360 versions.....then they go on to say that RB2 on wii won't have RB1 song uploads like the ps3 and 360 versions....nowhere in this article does it say that infinity ward is going to even consider making COD 6 set in WW2.

I re-checked that article, and didn't see Cliff say ANYTHING about being tired of the WW2 FPS genre. He was only going on about the COD series changing between developers. I for one agree with what he said. COD 1 and 2 were PHENOMENAL games, in fact I bought my 360 for COD2. But when treyarch took over for COD3, which was JUST an okay game, it did lose the MAGIC that infinity ward put into the first two installments and injected back into the fourth installment. COD 5 could be good, but I feel Infinity Ward's games will always be the better of the games.

Gamepro should stop putting words in peoples mouths....leave that to the fanboy members here, they will do enough of that.

I am kinda concerned about 5 being on the same level as 4.

1) I just don't know if Treyarch can pull it off.

2) The return to WWII as opposed to being modern warfare.

However, I did see some gameplay videos and it looks pretty nice. Can't wait to find out.

Your_Worst_Nightmare

Treyarch are a crap developer. Take a look at COD 3, that game was craptacular.

The_Iceman

I prefer the modern combat but obviously the people who work on these games love WW2 >

Tddawg

I don't get it they set up a modern warfare game and it's one of the best of all time so the next 2 are back to the WW2 period. Lame

artsaber

I'd much rather see a modern-to-futuristic weapon based COD game. Take some of those weapons off MGS4 for crying out loud!!! A rail gun in COD = Sweet!

JPThunder01

Hopefully in the next one they either return to Modern Combat or do any other time period BESIDES WWII. The Gulf War maybe? Vietnam? Plenty of other wars out there to use as a basis.
